How to Avoid Bedbugs While Traveling
|
Bedbugs are small, brown insects with long antennae and flat bodies. These bugs use a sharp, pointed beak to feed on the blood of people and animals. After World War II, bedbugs were virtually unheard of in our society, thanks to improved cleaning practices and the pesticide DDT. However, DDT was deemed unsafe for use and banned.
Bedbugs are prevalent in areas of Asia, South America, and Africa. It's common for these pests to stow themselves in suitcases of travelers and cross the seas to set up residence in North America. Because of this, it's crucial to understand how to avoid bedbugs while traveling.
Here are some precautions you can take to ensure you don't bring these pests home in your suitcase:
Inspect your luggage thoroughly before checking out of your hotel. Bed bugs may be apparent with the appearance of the bugs themselves, however it's not always so easy. If you don't see bugs, then look for dark spotting which is dried excrement that the bugs leave behind.
Take a close look at the hotel room where you're staying. As mentioned before, you'll want to look for dark spotting which is indicative of bed bugs. Another telling factor are bed bug bites. If you go to bed without a bite on your body and wake up covered in them, it just might be bed bugs. Inform the hotel administration immediately so the problem can be investigated.
Bed bugs can be eliminated with high temperatures. Therefore, if bed bugs are suspected, launder all your clothing, bedding, and other items in very hot water with a disinfecting laundry detergent.
By taking these precautions, you can avoid bringing these blood sucking pests home with you. If you do suspect that bed bugs have reached your home via your suitcase, call a professional exterminator right away. It's crucial to take care of the infestation before the bugs have the chance to multiply. Bed bug females can lay up to 500 eggs in groups of 10 at a time. These eggs hatch in no time, multiplying your bed bug problem by hundreds. Bed bugs can easily spread from room to room, so if you let the problem go, you may end up with an uncontrollable infestation.
